Around 1999, I walked into Gavin Brown Enterprises and saw a painting of an empty basketball court. How could a painting of an empty basketball court stick in my mind for over 10 years? Because it was painted by Peter Doig.
I just discovered that you can check out his 2009 Tate show @[ Virtual tour of Peter Doig's Tate Gallery Show ] (make sure to view full screen!)

Akari and I decided to drive to Canada over the 4 day Thanksgiving break. Our loosely planned destination was Montreal, but when we got there, we discovered it wasn’t much more than an American suburb where everyone spoke French, so we drove on and ended up in Quebec, a beautiful city founded by French [...]

Our friend Kaori Yamazaki is a designer at Ekovaruhuset, a Swedish clothing company that makes everything organically. Recently, Kaori has teamed up with Ashley Helvey, a California artist working with organic wools, on some of her new designs. Today, we hosted a little workshop in our backyard space where Ashley showed some friends how to make [...]

For the last 5 months, Akari and I have been doing nothing but working for our companies, or renovating the upstairs rental unit. We’re finally done with the upstairs renovation! Hopefully we can now get back to having more “normal” lives again. Here are some before and after’s.

In our upstairs unit, there was a window that had been sealed shut by the building that had been constructed after our building was raised in 1901. The prior owners simply painted over the glass. I decided to make it into a book shelf using the 107-year-old reclaimed wood from the baseboards that we replaced. [...]

From 1991-1996, I attended the University of California, San Diego’s Cognitive Science program, one of the very first Undergraduate programs of it’s kind. Part of my interdisciplinary studies, which included Artificial Intelligence, Neuroscience and Cognitive Psychology, were several courses in Perception and the Visual Brain. On that front, I took a few classes [...]

At 30,000 feet, on my flight back to NYC from last week’s business trip in San Franciso, I realized that my Max/MSP implementation for my sculpture’s MIDI interface is visual-overload/cognitive-unfriendly, so I rewrote it in Java. Thanks to Humatic Hypermedia for the JNI wrapper to CoreMIDI.

Akari and I have been so busy getting our new building set up that we completely forgot about our 2nd wedding anniversary. Because we’re living out of boxes, with our belongings strewn all about our new home, we ended up eating instant Thai noodles next to trash, carboard boxes and an industrial vacuum cleaner.
We were [...]

An Australian singer, “Sia”, with brightly painted hands signs as she sings against a white background. I love the formal/artistic performance structure, especially in the context of a goofy show like David Letterman.
